Evangelische Kirche
Hidden in a small village, in the Burgenlandkreis district of Germany, lies this forgotten Evangelische Kirche. This church, built in the 18th century, is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. Over time, the building has fallen into disrepair, but it still tells the story of its past.
The church is a saalbau, or hall church, a common style for smaller churches in the region. Its structure is simple yet elegant, with plastered walls and an eastern tower that features an octagonal upper floor. The tower is crowned with a dome and a small lantern, giving it a unique and charming silhouette.
There are two bells remaining in the tower, and a rope is still connected to them. On the gallery, you’ll find an old Hofman harmonium.
Center of community
The church was once the center of community life in the village. Today, it stands abandoned on the former churchyard, which is no longer in use. Nature has started to reclaim the area, with plants and trees growing around the building.
Unfortunately, the church is in poor condition, and visitors cannot enter it. The fragile state of the structure makes it unsafe, but the exterior is still worth seeing. It stands as a quiet reminder of the passage of time and the changing needs of the community.
Glimpse into history
The church was likely last used for a big event in 1974. Exploring places like the Evangelical Church gives us a glimpse into history. Though it is no longer used for worship, its walls hold stories of the past. If you visit, be respectful of the site and its surroundings. This abandoned church is a piece of history that deserves care and preservation. I visited the Evangelical Church in 2023.
