Kyosev School
Discover the ‘Kyosev School’, an abandoned Secondary School in the Kyustendil region in southwest Bulgaria. This school holds a story of the past. It used to be bustling with life, but now it stands silent and empty.
The school was left empty after young families relocated to the city. The village, home to fewer than 500 residents, is predominantly made up of elderly individuals. The school structure dates back to the 20th century, constructed with brick, and is currently in a state of disrepair. Years of exposure to the elements have taken their toll, resulting in significant damage. While most rooms have been vandalized, one classroom remains nearly untouched, offering a glimpse into the school’s past. Old school posters still adorn the walls, preserving a piece of history.
Theater
Inside the school, there is also a beautiful theater. This theater was the heart of the school. Students came here to watch movies, see plays, listen to music, and attend meetings. It was a social hub for the school and the community.
Against capitalism and fascism
At the entrance of the school, there is a monument. This monument is for the students who died during the last year of the Second World War. They fought with the Soviets against “capitalism and fascism”. This is a reminder of Bulgaria’s history. After the war until 1990, Bulgaria was very close to the Soviet Union. It was one of the most loyal allies during the Cold War. Some even called Bulgaria the 16th Soviet Republic.
Exploring this school is like stepping back in time. Each room tells a part of the village’s story. The decaying walls and forgotten items show how quickly things can change. The monument at the entrance is a powerful reminder of the past. It stands as a testament to the young lives lost during a turbulent time in history. I visited the abandoned school in 2022.
