Filature de Nomexy
THE ABANDONED TEXTILE MILL IN FRANCE
Explore the abandoned spinning mill ‘Filature de Nomexy’ also known as Filature Peters. It is located in the village of Nomexy, in the Vosges department. The factory has a rich history tied to the industrial revolution and the growth of the textile industry in France.
The factory was built in 1880 by industrialist Victor Peters and his partner Marcel Boussac. It played a significant role in the local economy. Many people from the surrounding area worked there. The factory specialized in spinning cotton. This was a common industry in the Vosges region due to its rivers, which provided the necessary power for the mills.
The ‘Fillature Peters’ became the property of Boussac in 1922. Eventually, thanks to the know-how of its employees, it became one of the most successful textile mills over the decades. The spinning mill was later sold to the industrialist Francois-Régis De Sèze.
However, like many other textile factories, Filature de Nomexy faced challenges in the 20th century. Changes in the global economy and competition from other countries affected the textile industry in France. Despite major investments in high-performance spinning machines, he was not able to prevent its closure. As a result, the mill was abandoned in 2010. Today, it stands as a reminder of the past. The building is still there, though it is in a state of decay.
