Pionerski Kazarmi
The former military region known as Pionerski Kazarmi (Pioneer Barracks) in Yambol, Bulgaria, is a place with a deep and fascinating history. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the site played a crucial role in the military operations of the country.
The Infantry Barracks in Yambol have been a key military location since the time of the Balkan Wars and the First World War. The city has always been an important military hub, hosting some of the largest military regions in Bulgaria. Several battalions from the headquarters of the former 7th Yambol Division were stationed here, contributing to the defense and strategy of the Bulgarian army.
In 1946, the military rapidly adopted a Soviet military doctrine and organization. The country received large amounts of Soviet weaponry, and eventually established a domestic military vehicle production capability. By the year 1988, the Bulgarian People’s Army numbered 152,000 men, serving in four different branches – Land Forces, Navy, Air and Air Defense Forces, and Missile Forces.
Forgotten Relics
One of the most intriguing aspects of the abandoned Pioneer Barracks is the presence of military relics left behind. In the vast 200-acre military estate, 83 remains of German tanks from the Second World War are scattered across the deserted yard. Among the ruins, even old Maybach engines, once worth millions, are slowly decaying, consumed by time and nature.
The Museum of Military Glory
Not all the military heritage in Yambol has been left to decay. One of the former military buildings has been restored and now houses the Museum of Military Glory. Opened in 2013, the museum preserves the memory of the soldiers who served in the region. Its exhibitions include original German tanks, weapons, and personal belongings of soldiers from the Balkan Wars and both World Wars. The entrance to the museum is marked by the restored Portal. This monument to the 29th Infantry Regiment of Yambol was originally built in 1928.
The Future of Pionerski Kazarmi
Recently, plans have been announced for the phased clearing of over 340 acres of the former Infantry Barracks. Dangerous structures and dense vegetation will be removed to make the area safer and gradually integrate it into the city. While the military history of the site fades, its memory remains alive through the museum and urban exploration.
For enthusiasts of abandoned sites, the Pioneer Barracks in Yambol provide a fascinating look into Bulgaria’s military history, showcasing a unique blend of restoration and decay.
