Restaurant Izvora na Belonogata

An abandoned Restaurant in

Conceived in 1961 and completed in the early 1970s, the restaurant was a cornerstone of a vibrant complex that included a motel, bungalows, and even a night bar. Designed by architect Tencho Dimov, the Izvora na Belonogata was built in a modernized Thracian style on a small acropolis. The building’s panoramic upper hall and sprawling terraces provided stunning views of the surrounding forests. The interior blended contemporary architecture with traditional domestic elements.

From the moment it opened, the restaurant became a magnet for visitors. Tourists, students, and locals flocked to its two halls, where a diverse menu, vibrant cultural programs, and breathtaking views created an unforgettable experience. During the day, buses filled the parking lot as people gathered to explore the nearby park and historical landmarks. At night, the restaurant transformed into a lively venue for entertainment. It had shows that captivated audiences from across Bulgaria and beyond.

Culinary Delights

The restaurant’s chefs offered a rich menu that combined local flavors with innovative dishes. Specialties like Melnicharski Kebab and Gergana bread. The domestic charm extended to the furnishings, with wooden tables and chairs and household tablecloths. Outside, the terrace featured a small theater stage and a pool of water, adding to the enchanting ambiance.

The Rise and Fall

By the early 1980s, the complex had been absorbed into Balkanturist, a state enterprise tasked with managing roadside attractions along international routes. Though the site continued to operate, its management style shifted, and its original charm began to wane.

The 1990s brought a darker chapter to the complex. The area became associated with criminal activities, and the restaurant fell into disrepair. Its closure predated the construction of the Maritsa-highway, which redirected traffic away from the E-80, underscoring the decline as a consequence of poor management rather than diminished relevance.

Preserving the Legacy

Today, the Izvora na Belonogata stands as a ruin, sold for a fraction of its value to a Turkish businessman. The complex was left to decay, a victim of short-sightedness and lack of investment. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. Recent discussions about renovating Belonogata Park, located below the restaurant, suggest a potential revival of the area.

The Izvora na Belonogata was more than just a restaurant, it was a symbol of community, creativity, and the harmonious blending of nature and architecture. I visited the restaurant in 2020.
